Make the Most of the NAIRR Pilot With a New Video, Report, and Meeting Materials

With support from the National Science Foundation, CaRCC and Internet2 are making available to the RCD community several new resources related to the National AI Research Resource  (NAIRR) Pilot.

Video: Requesting Resources Via the NAIRR Pilot

Watch the video of this webinar that has already been attended by more than 800 people. Lauren Michael and Tim Middelkoop of Internet2, co-Chairs of the CaRCC AI Facilitation Materials Working Group, present an overview of the process for requesting no-charge access to technology resources via the NAIRR Pilot program. In addition to introducing the available, no-charge technology resources, the presentation prepares AI Researchers and Educators for the development of successful resource allocation requests by covering:

  • Program eligibility and requirements for Classroom/Educator and Research projects
  • The proposal review and resource allocation processes
  • Specific proposal instructions from the NAIRR Pilot portal
  • Strategies for addressing specified review criteria
  • Example resource estimates that quantitatively justify requested NAIRR Pilot resources

Materials were developed with input from NAIRR Pilot operational staff, the CaRCC AI Facilitation Materials Working Group, and representatives from the National Science Foundation (NSF) with support from NSF award #2436057, though they do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF.

Final Report: NAIRR Pilot Inaugural Annual Meeting

The NAIRR Pilot Inaugural Annual Meeting took place from February 19-21, 2025, in Washington, DC, bringing together 378 attendees from 47 states representing diverse stakeholders including researchers, educators, resource providers, and federal agencies. The by-invitation event served multiple purposes: sharing first-year experiences, gathering feedback on operations and resources, fostering community connections across disciplines and institution types, and providing input to inform the NAIRR Pilot’s future direction. The meeting featured overviews from NAIRR Pilot leaders and stakeholders, keynote presentations from distinguished researchers including David Baker, Joyce Malyn-Smith, David Bau, and Baskar Ganapathysubramanian, lightning talks from NAIRR Pilot users, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities that highlighted achievements and mitigating challenges.
