As the new year ramps up, please join us and bring along a colleague for the annual CaRCC Parade, Tuesday, January 23, 4-5pm ET (1-2pm PT) for an update on CaRCC activities and how to get involved. Most track-specific calls are also resuming in January.

We will introduce CaRCC for newcomers, talk about the year ahead for CaRCC, and describe opportunities for existing and new members to get more involved. It’s a great way to stay connected with the CaRCC community or kickstart your involvement in CaRCC. It’s also a great way to introduce newcomers to learn more about CaRCC and hear directly from group coordinators, so bring a colleague!

End-of-Year Party and Other Community Calls in December

As the calendar year winds up, please join us for the annual People Network End-of-Year Party, Thursday, December 14, 1-2:30pm ET (10-11:30am PT). Among other fun, we’ll have presentations from other communities in the broader ecosystem, “ice breakouts”, CaRCC swag for raffles and “best attire” voting, and opportunities for other casual discussion, as well as breakout rooms for to discuss People Network input and reflections on Supercomputing. Most track-specific calls will resume in January, though you can also catch a December call on rapid expansion of campus research computing and data capabilities , jointly-hosted by the CaRCC Strategy- and Policy-Facing Track and the EDUCAUSE RCD Community Group.

Annual End-of-Year Party, Dec 14 (cross-track)

Join this year’s party in your most festive attire to partake in casual fun and reflections. We’ll thank our People Network contributors from the year and hear from partners and other communities in the broader ecosystem. Breakout discussions with fun ice breakers will be followed by “best attire” voting and raffles for CaRCC swag prizes. You can also provide input to the People Network or reflection the recent Supercomputing conference, or partake in other casual discussion. Call document and usual Zoom room will be distributed via email, as usual. ‘See you there!

Did you know that the month of November has a Geography Awareness Week and a GIS Day? To celebrate the role of the RCD community in supporting geospatial work, the Data-Facing and Researcher-Facing track will have discussions dedicated to geographic awareness. Some other tracks will skip or reschedule this month, to avoid holidays or conferences (see below).

There will be 3-4 short talks on various aspects of REDCap Deployment and/or use. Everyone is welcome.

Documenting metrics for RCD programs (part 2)

From reporting operational performance metrics in terms of system up-time to research impact metrics of grant dollars generated, every RCD program uses some sort of performance metrics to showcase its impact to various audiences. In this two-part discussion series, we are exploring different types of metrics in use at various RCD programs which are diverse in maturity/size. The June 7th call focused on the data collection done in compiling metrics; the July 5th call will be a discussion of how collected metrics data is used at different institutions.

RCD Nexus Day at PEARC23

Registration is now closed for the second annual RCD Nexus Day, a one-day workshop and networking event just for research computing and data (RCD) professionals on Sunday July 23, 8am-7pm preceding the PEARC23 Conference in Portland, OR. It’s an official PEARC co-located event, and there’s no additional cost to attend. Connect with your peers as we explore the topics that matter to you and your RCD career, including:

  • Student and staff workforce development topics and practices 
  • Understanding the RCD Capabilities Model assessment tools, and how best to use them at your institution (details below)

The event will be held at the main conference venue, the Oregon Convention Center. Space is limited and last year the event reached capacity, so don’t wait to register!

Travel support is available for those at U.S. institutions who request it by June 28. Just indicate your need when you register and we’ll send further information.

Open Community Discussion on Accessibility

During Data-Facing Track regular call time (1st Tuesdays)

Join for an introduction to the People Nework’s Accessibility Month series prior to group discussion. Participants will be invited to share the ways that they are thinking about and incorporating accessibility measures into their own resources. Discussion will include a Show&Tell of quick tips (so bring something you can share in 60 seconds or less!). The group will also brainstorm opportunities for enhanced accessibility for CaRCC activities.

Lena Bohman is Data Management and Research Impact Librarian at Zucker School of Medicine. She received her BA from Brown University and MSLIS from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Her specialties in librarianship are data and digital humanities, and she has previously worked on a variety of public scholarship projects. She has a 10-pound terrier with a spunky personality named Kenzi.
