Supporting Research Core Facilities, Panel Discussion,
- Dave Carlson, PhD, Senior Computational Scientist – Stony Brook University
- Colin Odden, Deputy Chief Research Information Officer, College of Medicine Research Information Technology – Ohio State University
- Jacob Fosso Tande, PhD, Research Computing Architect & Solutions Developer – North Carolina State University, additional panelists TBD
Supporting research core facilities and centers can be challenging for research computing and data (RCD) professionals. This May panel will explore why cores often fall outside standard IT/RCD support models and how to reduce cybersecurity risk when legacy systems are required. Panelists will share service models and maturity levels, and discuss common issues such as data management, fragmented environments, lab safety, network security, and unclear support lines. Join us to learn, ask questions, and share experiences.

Procurement in the Age of Volatility, Panel Presentation
Procurement processes have always been the bane of an HPC or large-scale computing systems practitioner’s existence, especially when it comes time for a major systems renewal. Institutional processes, facilities quirks, SoWs, and funding constraints have been persistent challenges, however the recent rise in supply chain volatility has put further pressure on existing pain points. This session will hear a few examples from research computing centres who have had, or are planning to, make changes to their existing approaches in order to deliver resources to researchers. We’ll explore the differences in impacts to different funding and procurement models such as centrally funded systems, grant funded clusters, and condo models. Panelists include:
- Brian Haymore, Sr IT Architect, HPC, Center for High Performance Computing, University of Utah;
- Dhruv Chakravorty, Senior Director, Advanced System, Princeton Research Computing;
- Matthew Smith, Manager, Research Infrastructure and Operations, Advanced Research Computing, University of British Columbia;
- Additional speaker TBC
Additional Community Opportunities
RCD Capabilities Model Office Hours: Tue May 12, 2026, 1p ET/ 10a PT (2nd Tuesdays):Have questions about getting started, completing, or viewing benchmarking data with the Research Computing and Data Capabilities Model? Or are you already working with it and want to discuss suggestions for improvements you’d like to see? Meeting coordinates: Zoom Session URL. Join the capsmodel-discuss@carcc.org mailing list or send questions to capsmodel-help@carcc.org.
RCD Workforce Development Interest Group Monthly Meet-Up: Tue May 12, 2026, 2p ET/ 1p CT/ 12p MT/ 11a PT (2nd Tuesdays): Topic. This session will feature two short presentations from Principal Investigators on NSF Strengthening the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE) awards, followed by questions and group discussion. The presenters will share practical insights from their workforce development efforts, including challenges distinguishing traditional IT roles from Research Computing and Data (RCD) roles, strategies for supporting domain experts as they grow into RCD careers, and lessons learned from building scalable, sustainable workforce development programs. The goal is to ground the conversation in real project experience while engaging the CaRCC community in discussion around shared challenges, emerging practices, and opportunities for cross‑institutional learning.
