CaRCC Chairs and Steering Committee Members voted to elect a Transitional Board for CaRCC as an important first step toward a longterm goal of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Board members will select officer positions at their first meeting and those results will be announced soon.
The following CaRCC Transitional Board members will provide special category representation:
- People Network: Bob Freeman and Lauren Michael
- Working Groups: Lauren Michael and Patrick Schmitz
- Interest Groups: Daphne McCanse
- Non-R1 Institution: Jason Simms

The elected members of the CaRCC Transitional Board are:
Dana Brunson
Executive Director for Research Engagement, Internet2
Brunson serves as co-chair of the CaRCC Logistics Operations Group and PI of the NSF RCD Nexus and the NAIRR EAGER grants that support CaRCC activities. She was part of the founding council of CaRCC, and a founding co-coordinator of the People Network and researcher-facing track. She co-chaired the Ecosystem Workshop Planning group and the Capabilities Model working group until late last year. She was an active member of the Financial Models group that developed the recommendation for CaRCC to move toward becoming a (501(c)(3). Previously, Brunson co-led the XSEDE Campus Engagement program which includes the Campus Champions as part of the XSEDE 2 project (2016- 2022) and while part of the Trusted CI project, she developed their Fellows program. She is currently serving as PEARC25 General Co-chair.
Thomas Cheatham
Director of Research Computing and the Center for High Performance Computing; Professor, Medicinal Chemistry and College of Pharmacy, University of Utah
Cheatham currently serves as the Acting Chair of CaRCC and has been an interim and elected Chair since CaRCC’s inception. He has been involved with numerous CaRCC working and interest, groups and currently serves in the CaRCC Logistics and Engagements Groups. He is a member of the Internet2, EDUCAUSE and CaRCC Research Computing and Capabilities Model working group and served on the XSEDE User Advisory Committee and Science Advisory Boards as well as being a member of the PEARC Conference Steering Committee. He is a current member of the Internet2 Research Program Advisory Group (PAG).
Bob Freeman
Senior Research Computing Facilitator, Harvard University
Freeman’s involvement with CaRCC started with the original, NSF-funded ACI-REF project, where he was both participant and team lead. He has co-chaired the Researcher-Facing Track and former Engagement Working Group and is currently a co-coordinator of the People Network. He continues to support CaRCC’s efforts as a Logistics group member and as a lead for the Metrics sub-committee under Logistics. Freeman volunteered for ten years as Secretary and Vice President in his local civic association where he assisted with its incorporation as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and twice led the committee to revise the organization’s by-laws.
Amy Koshoffer
Assistant Director, Research and Data Services, University of Cincinnati
Koshoffer holds a Master’s of Library and Information Science and has been a co-facilitator of the CaRCC Data-Facing Track for more than four years. She has served on the Research Data Access and Preservation (RDAP) Association board as inaugural treasurer, president elect, president and past president. As the inaugural treasurer, she completed the application for RDAP to become a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. She has also completed training facilitated by the Cincinnati Leadership Council that prepares people to serve on the board of non-profit organizations.
Daphne McCanse
Strategic Research Communications Consultant, Internet2; Communications and Outreach Lead, CaRRC
McCanse founded and co-led the CarCC Financial Models Group, co-leads the Communications and Outreach Interest Group, and serves in the CaRCC Logistics and Engagement Operations Groups. She holds a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management and has served as board Vice President for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school in her community. She currently serves as Marketing and Communications Chair for capital fundraising for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing shelter and services to those facing homelessness. As Indiana University’s IT Communications Officer, she was a member of the TeraGrid Communications Group, and was a co-PI on the NSF award for the Science Node publication. She has been an organizing chair for numerous conferences, including IEEE eScience and CloudCom and is a General Co-Chair for PEARC25 with Dana Brunson.
Lauren Michael
Strategic Research and Education Consultant, Internet2
As a co-PI of the ACI-REF project, Michael contributed to the ideation of CaRCC and as author and co-PI for the first NSF project that established CaRCC. She established the People Network as Coordinator of it’s first track (the Researcher-Facing Track), and has further supported the growth the organization’s infrastructure and impact via roles as Logistics Group co-Chair and People Network co-Coordinator. She contributes today to the Data-Facing Steering Committee, co-Chairs two Working Groups (Capabilities Model and AI Facilitation Materials), and actively contributes to a number of other ongoing and recurring activities and initiatives. She has been an active member of the Financial Models group and coordinates CaRCC’s involvement in the “RCD Community Builders” group.
Jason Simms
Research Computing Manager, Swarthmore College
Simms is coordinator of the Emerging Centers track for the CaRCC People Network and is on the steering committee of the Strategy and Policy Facing track. He has a broad range of RCD experience working for two major R1 universities, as well as three smaller institutions. He is passionate about supporting RCD efforts at smaller and under-resourced institutions, culminating in the creation and running of the Research Computing for Smaller Institutions (RCSI) conference. He co-leads an NSF-supported project to deploy a statewide Science DMZ throughout Pennsylvania and is actively involved in numerous organizations, including CaRCC, CASC, Campus Champions, CLAC, ACI-REF NS NERCOMP. He also serves on the Campus Champions leadership team and has served on the Boards of the Society for Applied Anthropology and the American Public Health Association.
Patrick Schmitz
Founder and Principal Consultant, Semper Cogito Consulting
Schmitz was among the founding members of CaRCC. He has been a co-chair of the Capabilities Model Working Group since its inception, led its development, and has been involved in support and community engagement for the Model and associated Data Portal. He has been a co-chair of the Career Arcs Working Group and was an initial track coordinator for the Strategy and Policy-Facing Track of the People Network. He is a member of the Logistics operations group and a co-PI on the NSF Cyberinfrastructure Centers of Excellence (CI CoE) pilot award “Advancing Research Computing and Data: Strategic Tools, Practices, and Professional Development.” Schmitz has experience across academic, non-profit, and industry institutions and led the creation and growth of the Research Computing programs at U.C. Berkeley. He helped to shepherd the transition of a large community-source museum management software project from its academic origins to a community not-for-profit organization and was a co-founder of a number of industry startups.
James Wilgenbusch
Director of Research Computing, University of Minnesota
Since CaRCC’s inception, Wilgenbusch has been actively involved in multiple capacities, including serving as a steering committee member for the Strategy and Policy Track. He has more than 30 years of experience as an RCD professional and served as Vice Chair, Chair, and is now past Chair of the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC). He has contributed to the Regulated Research Community of Practice as a Stakeholder Advisory Board member and served as a Technical Committee Member for the IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Virtual Conference and is a member of Internet2’s Research Program Advisory Group (PAG).
