Continuing Discussion on Artificial Intelligence

In August, Dr. Shuyuan Mary Ho Metcalf provided a talk called “Artificial Intelligence: The Beginning and the End of Human Wisdom.” It prompted significant discussion, but the call ended before the discussion finished. The steering committee decided to continue the discussion in Sept. If you missed the August call or need a refresher, the recording is on YouTube.

Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs)

RRIDs: Persistent Unique identifiers mark the things that are used in studies, key biological resources, and other important tools such as software tools, databases, core facilities, and now also instruments. These are used by various journals (primarily in biomedicine) to make searching for these things easier. The listing and use of the RRIDs has also allowed us to create AI tools that find papers where authors do not necessarily refer to the tool using the RRID, making it easier overall to find key resources.

In this session, Dave Godlove (Solutions Architect) will provide an update on the ongoing evolution of containers for HPC. We’ll discuss the transition from Singularity to Apptainer as a project supported by the Linux Foundation. Then we’ll turn attention to leveraging fake root permissions using the User namespace and running containers in “rootless mode”. We’ll also briefly discuss new recommendations for running containers in parallel and strategies for securing pre-built base containers. Finally, we will discuss job orchestration for containers in HPC. This presentation will be followed by a community discussion.
