Description:
Storage has always been a turbulent budget item, both for researchers and for research IT, but recent market conditions have not only driven up prices, they’ve made storage hard to procure at all. It is imperative more than ever to make sure the expensive storage tiers are utilized properly to keep costs in check. Traditional policies for tiering tend to backfire because file systems are missing research context. On the flip side, researchers have the context, but not the technical knowledge of managing file systems and data movement. In essence, this is a communication problem. If research IT can provide a means to connect research context to the file system, proper tiering policies can be created. The presenters will propose how their respective products can be used to implement this.
