CaRCC People Network Calls
Data-Facing Track (1st Tuesdays)
& Systems-Facing Track (3rd Thursdays)
Joint during the usual Data-Facing slot!
NSPM-33: Not a Type of Sun Lotion, Speaker and Community Discussion
Tu 10/1, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT
NSPM-33 is an information security memorandum issued January 2021, and applicable to US-based research institutions receiving federal funds. The directive mandates stronger, standardized information security disclosure requirements and the establishment of research security programs at research institutions receiving federal funds. This call is to help our community engage with NSPM-33 accordingly, and will look at both the data-facing and systems-facing requirements. What are the potential impacts to how research data is organized, stored and shared? How can we build an understanding of what technical solutions and controls need to be implemented to our systems? An introductory overview of the memo will kick off our discussion. Speaker: Jacqueline Pitter, CISSP: Senior Strategic Consultant with Vantage Technology Consulting Group
Strategy and Policy-Facing Track (1st Wednesdays)
RCD Cybersecurity Requirements, Trends, and Use-Cases Across Different Institution Types
Wed 10/2, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT
This call will include introductory remarks from Erik Deumens and Carolyn Ellis on trends and requirements in RCD cybersecurity followed by cybersecurity use cases from a couple of R1 universities. We will then have a community discussion.
Researcher-Facing Track (2nd Thursdays)
Ask Your Researcher-Facing Peers: What Are You Doing About Cybersecurity?
Thu 10/10, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT
Bring your questions about Cybersecurity for researcher-facing activities! Want to know how others coordinate with their campus Cybersecurity staff? Or how a facilitator might help a researcher to anticipate RCD Cybersecurity implications based upon their funding agency? We’ll brainstorm and prioritize questions like these, together, to inform several breakout discussion rooms. Come ready to share and learn!
Emerging Centers Track (3rd Wednesdays)
Postponed by a week, given multiple community workshops for the usual slot.
An Overview of Cybersecurity Resources for Emerging Centers, Community Discussion
Wed 10/23, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT/ 7a HT
After hearing 10-15 minute presentations from a member of the RCD cybersecurity community and a researcher that works with restricted data, we’ll have an open discussion about how cybersecurity concerns affect our work and what community members have done to mitigate those concerns.

The Research Computing Student Worker Program at UVA was established to enhance computational research support across the university by engaging student workers in short-term projects. This initiative relieves Research Computing (RC) staff from routine tasks, allowing them to focus on more complex, domain-specific research challenges. The program supports RC staff and provides students with early exposure to high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific computing, along with invaluable professional development opportunities. This presentation will cover the program’s establishment, key milestones, progress to date, and the challenges faced as we continue to refine and expand the initiative.
