Mark your calendars for these upcoming People Network calls (Zoom details at the end). For handy calendar entries, try the CaRCC Events Calendar. As always, we also highlight other opportunities from our partners and collaborators that touch members of the community.
Our CaRCC Monthly Welcome call will take place Tuesday, June 4, 2-2:30pm ET (1pm CT/12pm MT/11am PT), where you can learn more about the CaRCC organization and opportunities. Email info@carcc.org if you don’t have our People Network Zoom details.
Also, please note that our new community policy on AI bot participation will apply to all People Network gatherings starting in June 2024, and is being considered for application to all CaRCC-associated gatherings. Thank you to all those who provided feedback and input!
If you’re not on our mailing lists, join the People Network and join our Slack channels.

Leadership Training Programs
Join us for an insightful discussion on leadership training programs. As the demands on research computing teams continue to grow and evolve, effective leadership is more crucial than ever. In this session, we’ll explore training programs specifically designed to develop leadership and managerial skills within research computing environments. Gain valuable insights from both the organizers and participants of these programs, and discover strategies to enhance your leadership capabilities in RCD.
Researcher-Facing Track (2nd Thursdays)
Thu 6/13, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT
Topic: ACCESS Pegasus – A hosted workflow system for ACCESS users
Processing and analyzing large research datasets has become more complicated as workflows require multiple dependencies and the volume of data requires analysis on high performance computing systems. Creating portable research workflows is critical for efficient, scalable reproducible research. The Pegasus workflow management system allows researchers to construct workflows in abstract terms without worrying about the details of the underlying execution environment and can coordinate multiple distributed resources. This presentation will introduce ACCESS Pegasus – a new hosted, Jupyter based, workflow interface to ACCESS resources.
Emerging Centers Track (3rd Wednesdays)
Wed 6/19, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT/ 7a HT
The National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot
There’s considerable information out about NAIRR, and Emerging Centers is providing a session discussing the NAIRR Pilot project: there are both compute and data resources available, the most recent allocations period had a lot of interest in getting more resources. Our call will be an open discussion of:
– NAIRR Webinar: https://new.nsf.gov/events/nairr-pilot-webinar/2024-02-21
– NAIRR Partner Showcase: https://new.nsf.gov/events/nairr-pilot-partner-showcase/2024-05-21
– NAIRR Task Force Report: https://www.ai.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/NAIRR-TF-Final-Report-2023.pdf
Starter questions:
– Is anyone in our community using or planning on using the NAIRR resources
– If so, tips and tricks for applying / approval / usage?
– Collaboration around use / availability of resources?
– Any one involved in the trustworthy AI component of NAIRR?
Systems-Facing Track (3rd Thursdays)
Thu 6/20, 1p ET/ 12p CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT
Debian GNU/Linux for Scientific Research
Over the past decade, Enterprise Linux has dominated large-scale research computing infrastructure. However, recent developments have sparked increased interest in community-led alternatives. Debian GNU/Linux, a long-standing choice among researchers for supporting scientific work, is experiencing a renewed interest for High-Throughput Computing (HTC) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications. This session will provide an overview of how Debian is being utilized to support scientific research and will include a case study showcasing the migration of HTC operations from Enterprise Linux 7 (EL7) to Debian. Presented by: Dennis van Dok, Nikhef, the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics; Andreas Tille, Debian Project Leader
