Anaconda is a distribution of the Python and R programming languages for scientific computing that aims to simplify package management and deployment. The software and repositories offered by Anaconda Inc. are widely used in the research computing and data community for package and software management, and utilize a combination of proprietary and open source components.
In March 2024, Anaconda Inc. updated its terms of service (ToS) to limit free access and began enforcement of these licensing requirements. This change has caused significant concern and confusion among academic institutions, as it affects their ability to use Anaconda’s repositories and tools without incurring costs. The primary issues include:
- Licensing Costs: Institutions with more than 200 employees must now pay for a commercial license to use Anaconda.
- Compliance: Institutions are receiving notices from Anaconda about non-compliance with the new ToS. Anaconda puts the squeeze on data scientists • The Register
The Anaconda Transition Working Group was formed to help RCD groups meet compliance. We plan to do this in at least two ways – first, we plan to communicate with Anaconda to clarify its stance for organizations that do not fall clearly within the classifications outlined by Anaconda (such as national labs and teaching applications). Second, to provide information and guidance to the RCD community at large. We plan to accomplish this goal by developing an online knowledge bank offering alternative deployment details and developing white papers discussing the incident and subsequent community response.
