Casual Tuesday Community Roundtable
We want to take this month to hear a bit about what everyone is up to. This session will be a general sharing and free-form brainstorming session. We’d love to hear 3-5 minutes about projects that people are working on currently or new developments. If you’re stuck on something, feel free to bring that forward and get advice from the brain trust. We can also make breakout rooms for deeper discussions that arise.

Supporting Researchers with Containers

Containers are a growing part of the general computing landscape, including research computing. But when are containers a good fit for researchers and how can you support researchers using containers? In this call, we’ll provide a brief overview of containers and when they’re useful, how they relate to reproducibility, and how to support researchers (e.g. using, building, and/or maintaining them). Bring your experience and questions, and if you have extra time, stay after the meeting for follow-up questions with the presenters.

An Emerging Centers community call to highlight different institution’s experiences in supporting, promoting, and advancing RCD
Panelists: Jason Wells, Bentley University; Doug Jennewein, University of South Dakota and Arizona State University; Lauren Michael, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Susan Ivey, Research Data & Infrastructure Librarian, NC State University Libraries, leads a panel of Emerging Centers ‘Experts’ who will share their experiences and lessons learned which may be applicable to the development of coordinated approaches to supporting RCS/cyberinfrastructure in YOUR organization. These ‘experts’ from our community, who have different, yet similar, experiences, and come from a variety of institutions and will address questions such as:
- Can you describe the processes for planning, developing, and implementing a coordinated approach/model to supporting RCD/ cyberinfrastructure at your organization?
- Did you collaborate and coordinate with any existing units when planning?
- What does the reporting structure look like for new positions (how did you decide which units these positions would be placed, for example)? How did you prioritize needs and requesting of new staffing resources?
- What types of advisory and/or governance structures are in place?
Systems-Facing Track (third Thursdays)

Geddes Composable Platform – Purdue’s Kubernetes-based private cloud solution.
New usage patterns of computing for research have emerged that rely on the availability of flexible, elastic, and highly specialized services that may not be well suited to traditional batch HPC. Purdue’s Research Computing department is working to enhance and evolve the research computing ecosystem to respond to these needs. We will present an overview of the “Geddes Community Composable Platform”, a Kubernetes-based private cloud that builds upon Purdue’s Community Cluster program to provide cost-effective, highly responsive, and customizable composable computing solutions for domain science and education. Presented by: Erik Gough and Brian Werts, both at Purdue.
