Topic: Exploring the Frontiers of CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science

Speaker: Shaowen Wang, Associate Dean for Life and Physical Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). Professor of Geography & Geographic Information Science. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Abstract: Geospatial data science represents an emerging transdisciplinary field intersecting among three broad knowledge domains: geospatial science and technologies, mathematical and statistical sciences, and cyberinfrastructure and computational sciences. The core of this intersection encompasses the synergies and interactions between AI and cyberGIS (that is, geographic information science and systems (GIS) based on advanced cyberinfrastructure) with geospatial principles guiding discovery and innovation. This presentation explores the frontiers of cyberGIS and geospatial data science in the context of high-performance computing. Several fundamental research problems are addressed while a set of challenges and opportunities are identified for advancing data-intensive geospatial discovery and innovation.
